The group meets at 2.30pm on the SECOND TUESDAY of the month in St Mary’s Church Hall (Innox Hill BA11 2LN). There is free parking and refreshment facilities. We all share the costs of the hire.
The aim of the group is to literally ‘discover art’ through sharing interests of the group, recent exhibitions and experiences. We are able use the available IT resources to enhance talks and discussions with illustrations and videos.
In recent meetings we have covered a wide variety of subjects including the Renaissance in 15th Century Urbino and the international influences and range of genres that Art Nouveau reached.
Another member took us on a journey to Crete in the 1960s via Athens, Florence and the Musee de Cluny in Paris.
We have been shown the creative process of producing Stained Glass windows and looked at the wonderful windows in Gloucester Cathedral.
The British artist Sir Cedric Morris, his work, interests and influence through the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing has been another topic.
In a very enjoyable session we each brought a treasure from home that had a special story attached. We were taken to the studio of potter Bernard Leach; to the Musee Rodin, Paris; a garden in Melbourne; we appreciated the workmanship of a Florentine leather box; looked at an early gold-leaf edition of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ and were captivated by a sculpture of a small baby. We learnt about church vestments, Palestinian tapestry and the lost wax method of creating bronze sculpture.
Via Sky Arts we have visited The National Portrait Gallery and been able to focus on specific works and hear about favourite pieces In The National Gallery. The ‘Art Mysteries’ is another series that has given us the opportunity to explore individual works such as Cezanne’s ‘The Card Players’.
